Welcome to my Food Investigations page where I will conduct an investigation on a variety of fruits and vegtables that I eat each week. Each post will have a picture of the fruit or vegtable that I'm eating and will have a list of details on it.

Thursday, February 14, 2013: Organic Bananas


My sister bought them at The Big Carrot in the Danforth, and they had the fair trade and organic stickers attached.

Taste-o-meter: 9/10
Price: $3.00
Origin: Ecuador (about 5 000 km from Toronto)
Health Benefits: According to Canadian Living, the nutritional value of a banana is 105 calories. They also have 3g of fibre, it's a source of vitamin B6, it has more potassium than most fruit, and it has folate.




Wednesday, March 20, 2013: Organic Apples


I got the apples at Metro, they had a whole section on organic fruits and vegtables, including pears, bananas, oranges.

Taste-o-meter: 8/10
Price: $2.49/lb
Origin: U.S.A.
Health Benefits: According to Canadian Living, the nutritional value for 1 medium apple is 75 calories. It also has 3g of fibre, and they are natural breath fresheners and they clean your teeth with each bite.


Wednesday, April 3rd, 2013: Organic Strawberries




Taste-o-meter: 8/10
Price: $1.67/lb
Origin: U.S.A. or Mexico
Health Benefits: According to Livestrong, the nutritional value for a serving of strawberries (1 cup) is 50 calories. It also has 2g of fibre, and it has 160% of the daily reccomended value of Vitamin C.


Thursday, May 9th, 2013: Grape Tomatoes (non-organic)

Price: $2.99/343g
Origin: Product of Ontario
Health Benefits: Tomatoes have a large amount of anioxidents which help prevent cells from damaging and possibly causing diseases such as cancer and heart disease. They are also high in Vitamins C, A and E, most foods that have these vitamins are very likely to have antioxidents.


Friday, May 10th, 2013: Blackberries (non-organic)

Price: 3/$5 - 450g
Origin: Product of the USA
Health Benefits: Blackberries have Vitamins E, C, and K along with Anthocyanins (really powerful antioxident). According to Livestrong, one cup of blackberries has 6 grams of dietery fiber and magnesium, folate, potassium, and copper. They are really good for you.


Wednesday, May 15, 2013: Blueberries (non-organic)


Taste-o-meter: 9/10 (I really like blueberries, they were juicy!)
Price: 3/$5 - 121g
Origin: Product of the USA
Health Benefits: According to Canadian Living, bluberries are rich in antioxidants and have 1.5g of fibre per half a cup (125mL) of blueberries. They were also ranked No. 1 of having the most antioxidant activity compared to 60 other fruits and vegtables.

Wednesday, May 15, 2013: Organic Pears


Taste-o-meter: 7/10 (I don't really like pears as much but I think this one was pretty good)
Price: $1.49/lb
Origin: Argentina
Health Benefits: According to Canadian Living, 1 medium pear has 5g of soluble fibre, which means it can prevent constipation and it can also help prevent heart disease and decrease blood cholesterol levels.
